SafePath Empowerment Luncheon

image

What an honor it was to have the opportunity to meet and speak to everyone at the Empowerment Luncheon hosted by SafePath in Marietta. The reaction to my hour-long talk was superb, but it was the dialogue of the incredibly thought-provoking Q & A (scheduled for about 20 minutes, but went for nearly an hour) which will always stay with me. To see so many, so fully engaged—emotionally and intellectually—in the work of protecting children was inspiring. There were tears, and laughter, and so many ideas shared that I know will influence my work as Coached into Silence moves forward.

Afterwards I had the opportunity to tour SafePath’s innovative facilities, which should be a model for those who provide similar services throughout the nation. Everyone should check out the work they’re doing down there at safepath.org We could all learn something from them.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, who spoke to me, who listened to me, who took the time to reach out afterwards personally, and a special thank you to those at SafePath who invited me down and took such good care of me. I hope to be back soon! cg

I’m not a big car-namer, but I did refer to my unphotographable-at-night rental car as  Ortho Stice for the duration of our 23 hour relationship.

Spirits were high today at the Mardi Gras in Breezy Point, but everywhere there were reminders that we are not whole as a community until everyone has come all the way back.

What I’m writing to tonight:

July12013
“I’ve gotten convinced that there’s something kind of timelessly vital and sacred about good writing. This thing doesn’t have that much to do with talent, even glittering talent…Talent’s just an instrument. It’s like having a pen that works instead of one that doesn’t. I’m not saying I’m able to work consistently out of the premise, but it seems like the big distinction between good art and so-so art lies somewhere in the art’s heart’s purpose, the agenda of the consciousness behind the text. It’s got something to do with love. With having the discipline to talk out of the part of yourself that can love instead of the part that just wants to be loved. I know this doesn’t sound hip at all… But it seems like one of the things really great fiction-writers do-from Carver to Chekhov to Flannery O’Connor, or like the Tolstoy of “The Death of Ivan Ilych” or the Pynchon of Gravity’s Rainbow-is “give” the reader something. The reader walks away from the real art heavier than she came into it. Fuller. All the attention and engagement and work you need to get from the reader can’t be for your benefit; it’s got to be for hers. What’s poisonous about the cultural environment today is that it makes this so scary to try to carry out.” DFW

I had just returned to my seat after the too-generous response to my keynote had subsided when I was called back up to be presented with this beautiful birdhouse.
